Chapter 13

Business boomed—especially when Rico and Austin posted pictures of house hunting with Jacob to their social media accounts. The rock star and the King’s star had huge followings. The office phones were ringing off the hook. Jacob’s agents and staff were inundated with requests—to sell and to find properties. Schedules filled up fast for showings.

The first sale was pending. Along with half a dozen more—the anticipation over the new remodels on the condo building proved enticing for the younger demographics.

Yesterday, he called in more eager agents from Austin, who would arrive in the office early Monday morning.

In less than a week, Delaney worked her magic and handed Jacob a golden ticket in Dallas.

He’d never be able to thank her enough.

If truth be told, he didn’t want to discuss anything remotely businesslike with her at Thursday’s lunch. He longed to find out what she’d been up to, what fun she’d had, what high jinks she’d gotten into these last few days. Also, to thank you properly for the basketball pick-up game with the NBA players.

She was sunshine to his darkness. He needed more of her.

Entering the elegant restaurant, Jacob took it in. Gleaming wood, nice lighting, elegance, bustling atmosphere, and muted conversations greeted him.

The young, dark-haired hostess smiled. “May I help you? Do you have a reservation?”

“I’m meeting someone. Matthews.” He glanced around, trying to find her.

“Oh, I believe her, um, date has already arrived.” The woman frowned, looking at the table chart and then back at him.

A band around Jacob’s chest tightened, causing him to stop breathing. “Really?” Had Delaney accidentally added it to their shared calendar instead of to her real date, like she had with the squish sess? He should have checked instead of walking in blind. Plans were meant to be adhered to, strictly followed. Confirmed, if in doubt. He never went off-the-cuff. Look where it had gotten him—egg on his face.

“I could check with Miss Matthews…”

“Never mind.” He brushed it off, hoping to dislodge this rejected feeling building up inside him. One last time, he searched the crowded restaurant, hoping to get a glimpse of Delaney and her date. The last thought sent a shaft of raw jealousy through him.

Jacob stilled when he spotted her. She was seated with her back to him and across from an older couple, laughing at something—the musical sound floating in the air. His heart pinged to life. “I found her. I’ll just go join them.”

“But, but…” Her voice trailed off as he marched away, intent on his mission.

Surely he wouldn’t make a fool of himself here, in public. The worst would be she’d brush him off. He’d make it seem like a chance meeting and leave. Maybe.

He gained the older couple’s attention first as they watched his approach. He nodded and breathed a sigh of relief at their friendly smiles.

“Delaney.”

She whipped around at the sound of his voice. The surprise in her eyes clued him into another calendar mix-up. “Rocky! Hey, what are you doing here? Oh, you’re wearing the pink shirt today!”

“Lunch.
